The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord

On February 2 the Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, also known as Candlemas. This day marks the moment when Mary and Joseph, in obedience to the Law of Moses, brought the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem 40 days after His birth. There, they offered Him to the Lord as the firstborn male, fulfilling the Jewish law of consecration.

This feast is rich in meaning, blending the themes of obedience, light, and revelation. It is a significant moment in the life of Christ, as it symbolizes His mission as the Light of the World, bringing hope and salvation to all people. At the Temple, Simeon, a righteous and devout man, recognized Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Simeon declared Jesus to be “a light for revelation to the Gentiles and glory for your people Israel” (Luke 2:32).

Traditionally, this day is celebrated with the blessing of candles, symbolizing Christ as the Light that guides us out of darkness. The candles also serve as a reminder of our calling to reflect Christ’s light in our daily lives, sharing His love and hope with others.

Blessing of Candles at St. Mary Parish

This year, St. Mary Parish in National City will commemorate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on Sunday, February 2, 2025. A special blessing of candles will take place at the beginning of every Mass. Parishioners are encouraged to bring their candles from home to be blessed during this solemn occasion. Let us come together to celebrate this beautiful feast and reflect on how we, like candles, are called to radiate the light of Christ in our community and beyond. We look forward to seeing you at Mass as we honor the Presentation of the Lord and His mission to bring light and salvation to the world.
